Practical Exam – What to Expect

When candidates arrive a few minutes prior to their scheduled time, the examiner will do the following:
  • Introduce himself/herself
  • Check the candidate’s government-issued photo ID to verify candidate is person registered for exam
  • Clearly print the candidate’s name and information on the Observation Sheet
  • Verify that the candidate has PPE required by that particular site (Personal Safety Equipment such as hard hat and hard soled shoes)
  • Provide the candidate time to review the practical Exam activities and review the load chart and operation manual for the crane they will be using.
  • Go over instructions with each candidate
  • Give the candidate a CIC business card at the end of the exam to encourage the candidate to freely contact CIC with questions or comments.

Candidates may not watch other candidates taking a Practical Exam. The main reason is that onlookers may distract the candidate. Candidates wait in a waiting area until called to the exam site. When the examiner is ready for the candidate, the candidate is escorted to the exam site and given opportunity (15 minutes) to get familiar with the crane and tasks. The examiner will provide clear instructions and clarify, if needed.

Scoring

Examiners do not score the Practical Exam. Observation Sheets are sent to CIC’s certification partner, 4ROI, for scoring. Scores are emailed to the candidate's email on record and available online within 10 business days.
