Practical Examiner - Qualifications

Practical Examiners must have the qualifications to learn to safely and accurately conduct CIC Practical Exams. Below is a summary of the qualifications to be a Practical Examiner.

  • Complete a Practical Examiner Application and have it approved
    • Experience must include four (4) years crane-operating experience or appropriate crane-related training or education with the crane type(s) they will be examining
  • Show a valid US Government issued photo ID at training session
  • Successfully complete the CIC Practical Examiner Training session and test
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the crane type(s) they will be examining by:
    • Passing the appropriate CIC Written Exam(s) - OR -
    • Provide proof of a valid, authorized practical examiner card from a nationally accredited entity*
  • Provide a current photo
  • Sign a security agreement
  • Pay the appropriate fee

Based on the Practical Examiner Application CIC will review your qualifications to be trained as a CIC Practical Examiner.

Practical Examiners retain their authorization for up to five (5) years by conducting a minimum of three (3) Practical Exams each year. Reauthorization is needed only every five years. Reauthorization includes the same qualifications, but the training is a shorter refresher course and demonstrating operator knowledge only requires the written recertification exams.

* CIC Examiner Authorization will be valid only for the time remaining on the existing authorization.

Do Practical Examiners Need to be Certified Crane Operators?

While it is highly recommended that Practical Examiners be CIC Certified Crane Operators, CIC also welcomes other well-qualified individuals to become Authorized CIC Practical Examiners. Examples may include operators certified through other accredited programs, supervisors leading operator apprenticeship programs, crane inspectors, crane operations managers, and more. CIC does, however, require that either the Practical Examiner or Proctor be a certified crane operator.
