Exam Prep Tips

Certified crane operators are knowledgeable about the ASME.B.30.5 Standards and OSHA regulations for safe crane operation. They can operate the crane types related to their certification. Training is not required to take certification exams. However, individuals interested in certification should prepare to succeed by building their knowledge and having practical hands-on experience and/or training.

Good preparation may be participating in a quality training program or self-study of relevant materials. The Training tab on this website lists references of materials for self study and descriptions of training content to help candidates prepare for written exams. CIC also recommends that candidates practice precision crane operation, using a crane in the category prior to taking a certification exam.

Tips for Passing Your Practical Exam

Operating a crane effectively requires a substantial amount of manual dexterity and skill. Therefore, be aware that the CIC practical exam is designed to thoroughly test the skills and abilities required to operate a crane in a real-life situation. Like driving a car or any other activity requiring physical skill, that kind of ability is not something that comes overnight. Competent performance in that type of activity comes as a result of a significant amount of hands-on practice. We recommend that you have at least 6 months of experience operating the type of crane you plan to be tested on.

The types of skills tested are described in the Candidate Handbook under Content Outline for Practical Exam.
