Written Exam Site Requirements

Written Exam Sites must be safe and suitable locations to conduct Written Exams. A specific individual must be identified who will act as the Written Exam Site Coordinator, and CIC Authorized Written Examiners need to be confirmed prior to registering for the exams. Below is a summary of site requirements.

Please see the Written Exam Site Coordinator Handbook for complete information.

Exam Site

The exam site itself needs to meet the following requirements.

  1. Signs directing candidates to the test location as well as a clear sign-in reception area
  2. Access to restrooms and water fountain
  3. Adequate parking
  4. Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (e.g. handicapped access in case it is needed)
  5. One entrance to the exam room, since candidates must enter and exit through a single door
  6. Comfortable indoor seating and:
    1. If a paper exam, a smooth, hard writing surface sufficient to accommodate exam materials
    2. If internet-based exam, computer screen, full keyboard and mouse for each candidate with high-speed internet connection.
  7. All seats facing the same direction with spacing of at least four feet from center of desk to center of proximal desks or equivalent, if using long tables
  8. A quiet testing environment with normal room temperature and adequate lighting
  9. Backup plans/location in case of emergency or problem during the exam
  10. Proper building security to provide for secure storage of exam materials prior to the exam day

Written Exam Site Coordinator

The organization must identify a person to act as the Exam Site Coordinator. See Responsibilities for more information.

The Site Coordinator is required to access, read, and follow the Exam Site Coordinator Handbook for Written Exams which provides full detail on all site requirements.

Authorized Chief Examiner

Written Exams require a Authorized Chief Examiner and proctor. The site does not need to have a designated Authorized Chief Examiner on staff, but will need to secure one to conduct exams. Your site can get Authorized Examiners in three ways:

  1. Contact CIC to request Authorized Examiners for your site before setting the exam date. To do this email help@4roi.com at least 3 weeks in advance of when an exam is desired, and provide the desired date(s), start time, and exams to be given. CIC will confirm the dates and examiner, if possible, charge the examiner fee, and open the exam date for registration.
  2. The site may also select an Authorized Examiner from the list of public CIC Authorized Examiners once the site is authorized.
  3. The site may choose to authorize Chief Examiners to conduct the exams. Please note that Chief Examiners must have relevant experience and NOT be associated with the crane industry.
